about

How to capture the awesomeness of the Elvis Presley of fountains? I recorded many of Rome's fountains but Trevi needed something special. I tried recording it several times throughout my stay in Rome. Finally, on the last night, I was wandering home from a bar, and there was an otherworldly glow coming from a side street of narrow medieval proportions, so I followed the glow down this interesting street. Soon I heard the hiss of a large quantity of water moving quickly, and then Trevi Fountain appeared before me. I decided to try recording it from 6 different positions, working my way around the fountain. I would set up the microphone, record as long as it took me to fill up two pages of observations in my notebook, then move to the next position. I got the right and left most corners, where there’s a lot of splattering from tiny streams hitting the brutal, glacial-like masses of marble. The center view gives that big "woosh." This is what you hear in the beginning, and this is what it sounds like when you are approaching the fountain from any direction and still cannot see it. Slowly, the complete 180-degree soundscape of the fountain envelops you.
